Is it legal to pay someone to fill out a permit application?
Yes, when it’s done right. PermitPrefill is a document preparation service: we transcribe the facts you give us onto your agency’s current application, and you review, sign, and submit it yourself. We don’t tell you which permit to apply for, we don’t advise what to include, and we don’t interpret code — that keeps us on the scrivener side of the line and away from legal advice.
Two states have their own document-preparer regimes: Arizona certifies Legal Document Preparers and California registers Legal Document Assistants. We comply with state requirements before taking work in either state. Nothing on this site is legal advice; if your project has a legal question in it, a local attorney is the right call.
Will you tell me which permit I need?
No — and that’s deliberate. Choosing which permit applies to a project can cross into professional advice, so the permit pick stays with you (or your contractor, designer, or attorney). Do you submit or file the application for me?
No. You review the finished application, you sign it, and you submit it yourself — on your agency’s portal, by mail, or in person. That keeps the filing, and the accuracy of its contents, squarely yours. Your delivery includes an attachment checklist so the filing goes through the first time.
Which parts of the country do you serve?
All 50 states and D.C. Permit paperwork is issued by city, county, and state agencies — not one national office — so every job starts with verifying your specific agency and its current form. That’s how a nationwide service handles 19,000 different municipalities: one verified form at a time.
My project needs stamped plans or a licensed pro’s sign-off. Can you handle that?
We can’t create those — stamped drawings, engineered plans, and licensed trade sign-offs must come from licensed professionals, and no document service can substitute for them. But we will prepare everything else on your application and flag exactly what still needs your architect’s or contractor’s hand before you file. Some trade permits also require a licensed contractor as the official applicant; we flag that up front too.
What exactly do I get back?
A completed application based on your facts, prepared on the current version of your agency’s form — plus a checklist of everything you need to attach, and filing instructions for your agency. Standard tier and above include an organized attachment packet and one round of tweaks after your review. You receive everything by email, ready to review and sign.
How fast is it?
Standard jobs are delivered within 1–2 business days after you approve your quote. Rush 24-hour turnaround is available on any tier for an additional $49 — we’ll confirm the deadline before you pay, so you never pay for speed we can’t deliver.
What happens to my personal information?
We collect only what your application and quote actually need — never more. Your intake and documents are used solely to prepare your paperwork, they’re never sold or shared, and we delete working copies after delivery whenever you ask. Handle sensitive originals (full SSNs, IDs) as minimally as possible; we’ll only ever ask for what the form itself requires.
